The World Trade Organisation on Thursday described former Nigerian finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the best candidate for its top job.

Keith Rockwell, WTO’s spokesperson, said in the organisation’s Wednesday night statement that an internal review showed Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala has the best chance of being the director-general.

“The candidate that had the best chance of attaining a consensus of the membership is Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria”, Mr. Rockwell said. “Consultations on the way foward will start immediately”.

On Wednesday afternoon, reports emerged that Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala has been elected as director-general. Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala and South Korean Yoo Myung hee were selected as the last two candidates in the contest earlier this month.

Peoples Gazette cited Arise TV’s report that said Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala had been elected and would be unveiled today.

Although a formal announcement has yet to be made, WTO insisted the Nigerian is a shoo-in for the first female director-general.

WTO’s director-general position has been vacant since Roberto Azevedo resigned in August, one year to the end of his tenure.
