Republicans prepare to impeach Joe Biden as ‘Chinese agent’

The division and acrimony that characterised Democrats’ dealing with the Trump presidency may continue now that they have their own man in office.

Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has unveiled immediate plans to file articles of impeachment against President-elect Joe Biden, a day after his inauguration as the 46th president of the United States.

The newly elected member of the U.S. House of Representatives said Wednesday that the impeachment filings would come as early as Mr. Biden’s first day at the Oval Office on January 21.

“We cannot have a President of the United States that is willing to abuse the power of the presidency and be easily bought off by foreign governments, Chinese energy companies, Ukrainian energy companies,” Ms. Greene said in an interview with American news channel NewsmaxTV.

The 46-year-old congresswoman did not provide any evidence to substantiate her claims.

“I can’t imagine people in this country being so fearful of the future of a Biden presidency that they may be willing to commit violence like they did in the Capitol here in Washington, DC,” she reckoned, hours after Congress voted to impeach President Donald Trump for a second time, with just about a week left to the end of his tenure.

The brewing onslaught on the incoming Biden administration by the Republican party is, however, expected to be deflated at the Democratically controlled House of Representatives.

Although Ms. Greene’s impeachment moves have been largely criticised as inflammatory, the independence of the Biden administration is still being hotly debated.

In December, the BBC reported an official from the U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence, William Evanina, to have suggested that Chinese authorities had ramped up efforts to influence the new U.S. leader.
