Ekiti State government on Sunday imposed a 8.00pm to 6.00am curfew and also banned gathering of more than twenty people until further notice in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus in the state.

Citing the second wave of coronavirus and the increasing number of infections in the state, the information commissioner, Akinbowale Omole, said the curfew and other restrictions will take effect from Monday.

“There is a need for the government to be proactive and take decisive steps to secure the citizens from falling prey to the second wave of the pandemic that has claimed thousands of lives all over the world,” Mr. Omole said. “There is also a ban on all public gatherings of more than twenty people while Covid-19 prevention protocol should be strictly observed even in such gatherings.”

The state government also urged citizens to adhere strictly to COVID-19 safety protocols such as wearing of face mask, maintaining social distance and washing of hands with soap and water.

Ekiti State has recorded 434 cases of coronavirus, 403 infected patients have been treated and discharged, while seven have died as a result of the virus.

Nigeria has recorded over 99,000 cases of coronavirus, over 79,000 have been treated and discharge, while over 1,300 have died as a result of the virus.

The federal government last week announced that a 100,000 doses of coronavirus vaccine will arrive the country by the end of this month, adding that national leaders, health workers and other vulnerable citizens will be prioritised for vaccination.
