A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday, sentenced a driver, Mohammed Yunusa, 33, to four-month jail for cheating his friend in a vehicle leasing agreement, otherwise known as ‘hire purchase’.

Mr. Yunusa, a resident of Ungwan Sarki Kaduna State, was charged with criminal breach of trust and cheating his friend, Haruna Hamza, to the tune of N240,000.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, sentenced Mr. Yunusa after he pleaded guilty to the charges.

Mr. Emmanuel, however, gave the convict an option of N10,000 fine and also ordered him to refund the N240,000 to the complainant.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo told the court that Hamza lodged a complaint against the convict on December 3, at the Gabasawa Police Station.

Mr. Leo said sometimes that in September, the complainant entrusted his Mercedes truck to Mr. Yunusa, who was his friend, on hire purchase with the agreement to pay N30,000 per week.

He said the convict used the truck for two months and failed to remit the sum of N240,000 to the complainant.

The prosecutor said any time the complainant asked for the money, the convict would always promise to give him but never did.

He said that the offences contravened the provisions of section 51 and 89 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017.
