Biden, Harris emerge Time’s 2020 Person of the Year

The annual selection recognises a person’s influence in the media over the past year.

• December 11, 2020

U.S. President-elect Joe Biden and his Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris have been named the 2020 Person of the Year by Time Magazine.

The magazine’s editor Edward Felsenthal said in a statement that the two politicians will bring to the United States what President Donald Trump failed to bring in the last four years of his administration.

“If Donald Trump was a force for disruption and division over the past four years, Biden and Harris show where the nation is heading: a blend of ethnicities, lived experiences and world views that must find a way forward together if the American experiment is to survive,” Mr. Felsenthal said while announcing the selection late Thursday.

Messrs. Biden and Harris were selected from a shortlist that included Mr. Trump, Anthony Fauci and other coronavirus front-line health workers and the campaigners for racial justice that followed the police killing of George Floyd.

The annual selection recognises a person’s influence in the media over the past year. Mrs. Harris is the first vice-president to be named as Person of the Year since Time launched the honour in 1927.

In 2019, teen climate change activist Greta Thunberg became the youngest person to be conferred with Time’s Person of the Year.
