Army sends 4 soldiers to prison for extra judicial killing

Mr. Benjamin was also tortured to death.

The Nigerian Army on Tuesday imprisoned four of its officers for torturing a civilian, Peter Apogu to death.

The officers, Sani Ishaya, Bidemi Fabiyi, Abdulrasheed Adamu, and Bala Musa were arraigned by the Nigerian Army for manslaughter before 7 Division General Court, Operation Lafia Dole, Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri, Borno state capital.

Peoples Gazette learnt that Mr. Apogu was accused of theft and was tortured to death by Mr. Ishaya.

The court sentenced erring officer Ishaya to four years imprisonment, while his accomplices Messrs Fabiyi, Adamu and Musa got two years, one year and one year sentences respectively for involvement in the crime.

The army has a history of torturing civilians and many deaths have been recorded in the process.

In February 2020, the Army sentenced three of its officers to 10years imprisonment for killing a colleague, Lance corporal Collins Benjamin.

Mr. Benjamin was also tortured to death.
