Ex-Lagos military governor Ndubuisi Kanu is dead
A former military governor, Ndubuisi Kanu, has passed away after protracted but undisclosed ailments.
Vanguard and TVC reported Wednesday afternoon that Mr. Kanu, a retired rear-admiral in the Nigerian Navy, reportedly died at a hospital Wednesday morning. He was 77.
The late naval chief was first appointed military governor of Imo State in 1976 by the then military head of state Olusegun Obasanjo.
Subsequently, the deceased was transferred to become military governor of Lagos State in 1977, leaving office in July 1978.
Mr. Kanu also participated in several political activities during the pro-democracy movement in the early 1990s.
He was a member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), a pro-democracy group that fought for the inauguration of the late Moshood Abiola as Nigeria’s president following his victory at the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
The election was considered as the freest and fairest election that has ever been observed in the country’s history. But it’s annulment by former military ruler Ibrahim Babangida made its impossible for both the winner and the citizens to reap its democratic benefits.
